Bonsai, which is pronounced (bone-sigh) is an ancient horticultural art form. Today the art of Bonsai is practiced through-out the world. Some historians date the practice of creating Bonsai Trees back to the early Oriental Empires and some say back to the Roman times and earlier. Some Bonsai Keepers have reported Bonsai Trees documented to be over two hundred years old.
However, this manual will not teach you the History of Bonsai. It was written to teach young people a few simple techniques to help create Bonsai Trees in a backyard, sunroom, balcony or back porch. I even heard about a long haul Truck Driver who keeps his smallest Bonsai Tree living on the dashboard of his BIG TRUCK. He and that little tree travel all over this GREAT COUNTRY.
Bonsai is a combination of human hands and nature working in harmony to create beautifully unique living art forms in all shapes, sizes, styles and colors.
Just planting a tree in a small pot does not make it a Bonsai.
Bonsai Trees are kept small by carefully cutting away unwanted branches and foliage and by controlling it's growing conditions. You decide the overall look by training and shaping the trunk and main branches in the direction you want them to grow, giving the tree a personal touch of style and character.
You might see a beautiful large tree in your yard, or your neighbors yard, that you would like to have as a Bonsai. By using the following techniques you will learn from this manual, you can recreate that tree in a small version from the tree or plant of your choice. Your neighbor may give you permission to take a few cuttings or seedlings from one of their trees. You could offer to start a tiny Bonsai Tree for them and start a conversation piece with your neighbor(s).
The Art of Bonsai is a lot of fun and can be very quiet relaxing hobby. As the seasons pass by, your living art will grow more beautiful and the stories about your Bonsai Tree(s) will grow as well.
Past visitors have have started local Bonsai Clubs in their neighborhoods. Some have monthly meetings and workshops and sometimes organize Special Bonsai Tree Sales and training classes and donate the proceeds to the National Arbor Day Foundation. It's great for stress relief and you can teach a friend, tell'm about this site.
